MARCH LOM2Q INTERVIEW
SWTOR TEMPLE
MARCH 2009 - caine
Wow! February seemed to go by incredibly fast. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it's the shortest month and all, but it seems like we just posted the last interview and it's already time for a new one.
So, what kind of LoM2Q interview do we have for you this month? How about Caine from SWTOR Temple! *waits for the cheering to subside* If you don't know, SWTOR stands for: Star Wars: The Old Republic, an upcoming MMO from BioWare. Caine is a Registered User on the Legion of Myth forums, and is co-developer of the SWTOR Temple fan site.
I must say that this was certainly one interesting interview. At more than one point, I wasn't even sure if it was going to happen. My computer's power supply dying during a critical phase of the interview process certainly had a large factor in this fear. Luckily, I got a new PSU, was able to get back on track, and am now able to present to you the March interview.
Thanks to both Caine and Guru for their time, patience, and humor in this endeavor! I really appreciate it.
This interview with SWTOR Temple is not solely for our Zeroł folks, all of Legion of Myth, as well as our guests and friends can get something from SWTOR Temple. I mean, come on. Who of you isn't a Star Wars nerd? ;)
Without further ado, meet Caine from SWTOR Temple.
Q1: What is SWTOR Temple?
C: SWTOR Temple is (or lets say will be) a site which has the potential to compete with the Jedi Archives. :)
Q2: Where can people go to visit SWTOR Temple?
C: http://www.swtortemple.com
Q3: Who is your target audience?
C: This site is mostly targeting US and European people (mostly UK territory). We'll be playing on U.S. servers, as most of our community will be formed by U.S. people. But we'll also have an account on European servers. We'll have a team dedicated to the EU territory.
Q4: What are your expectations for SWTOR Temple?
C: We want to form a community not just for SW:TOR lovers, but also people who want to have info on the Star Wars saga. We'll not form a guild or a strict, midsize community. We want to form the most inclusive site ever.
We aim to have a large community who can have fun in our forums, and gain knowledge through the news we find or receive from the Internet or the BioWare guys; (well, that's not an option at the moment while they keep most of the info to themselves, but we believe we'll have the chance of having some exclusivity at some point in the future.)
Q5: Although there's no exclusive content yet, have you had any direct contact with anyone from the BioWare team?
C: Well yes. We have talked a bit with Sean Dahlberg, but generally not about SW:TOR. Just general issues of what's expected from fan sites, and we shared our ideas for what we need from Bioware.
Q6: What sets your fan site apart from other SW:TOR fan sites?
C: I believe we have much more experience in MMOs. Besides, we can easily sacrifice ourselves in order to make George Lucas make new films on KOTOR or [New Jedi Order] ... Joke aside, we really know what Star Wars is and meant to be. We're sooo sure we'll produce fun and deep content in the following days, as soon as the "Call of Real Life" lowers its pressure. :)
Q7: Will you form a guild in the SW:TOR from the SWTOR Temple community?
C: No. We're tired of issues like guilds, or in-game communities after so many MMO experiences. But we'll be more than happy to see people with us in our site. Contribute to the community more and you'll get your rewards.
Q8: Would you ever consider micro-transaction content on your site - or a premium membership with a subscription fee for bonus content, or will your site always remain free of charge?
C: Our site will stay free of charge. I can't talk in the place of my son, who will one day make this site proud :p But for myself and Guru, we're against sites which have placed a fee for content... Community is something free... can not be sold away... like our souls.
Q9: So, who are the guys & gals running the SWTOR Temple site?
C: For now me (Caine) and Guru are in charge. And also our dear moderators, who are trying to make the fire that we have produced come alive.
Q10: What can you tell me about you two?
C: We're 2 "geeks" who met in Shadowbane around 2003. I, Caine, am generally responsible for finding info on the Star Wars Universe, finding ideas on what help can be offered to our community, and deciding with Guru on what can be done for a better site. I'm working for a private company as Sales Manager.
Guru is responsible for technical issues regarding the site and deciding on what improvements can be done to our site, like a Wiki option or community advancements. Also, he'll be responsible for MMO info structure of our site, SWTOR: Temple.
Q11: For how long have you been interested in Star Wars?
C: Personally, I have been interested in Star Wars since I was 7. Now I'm 32. I did not succeed in finding a replacement for it, because there's none. :)
Q12: Is this your first community site or have you guys worked on other projects?
C: Well, Guru is the expert on community sites. He has also worked on many other projects like the official fan site for Aion Online, a site for Turkish Community, and other MMO sites in his portfolio. Also Guru was responsible for local fan sites for Warhammer Online, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and a General Diablo Site.
Q13: What difficulties are you facing while updating the site?
C: Well, the major problem is the flow of info is too low from BioWare. It has become an issue of "wait for Friday and you'll receive a cookie." We know that they need more time to bring out a very nice game, and not screw everything like SWG did. But this is a disadvantage for community sites like ours. People need info and we have to give it to them.
Another thing is on the technical side. Our current forum application is doing fine now, but it's not a good one for the upcoming member wave. So we're doing our preparations for it to make them have the best service around. :)
Q14: What additions or changes are you planning?
C: Well lots of things will be up in the following months like, a guild database, a wiki for the Star Wars saga, and a new layout and forum style. All will be up in the following months. But we want to keep it late and clean, so that we do not have serious problems after the launch. Thanks to BioWare, we have more time to do tests.
Q15: What do you think for the upcoming SW:TOR MMO?
C: Well BioWare is keeping too much info for itself. :) But we know that they're on the right track. They've a great team of people. Sean Dahlberg is a really great guy who is VERY interested in community issues. The writers are great, and you can track them from some novels in Star Wars saga. Also developers are doing a great job after seeing the screen shots they've published.
The whole team is not giving any promises, which I believe is the most important virtue in them. They're not exaggerating things like "bar fights will be all over the universe" or "you'll have a wife, a kid, a house, a car, a yacht etc" they just give the info which they're sure 100%.
So it'll be a really great game, and we're trying to step on the breaks not to go wild.
[Editors Note: For those of you who played Shadowbane, you may remember Sean Dahlberg, aka: Ashen Temper.]
Q16: What do you think about the community relations of BioWare?
C: At least they're listening. You know, in most of the MMO communities, Community Relations representatives are seen as "Nazis". They're totally ignoring, stubborn and sometimes "rude". But the BioWare guys are far better. Maybe they're not "democrats" ...*siren sound here* Joke aside, they're doing a great job on controlling and showing the right way to community.
Q17: What are your hopes for the SW:TOR game?
C: Well I believe in BioWare and this game. I also believe Lucasarts learned a lesson from their SWG experience, and they'll not ruin their best brand again. I mostly call this game as "At last! An MMO where I can anchor". I guess this sums it all up.
Q18: What are your fears regarding the SW:TOR game?
C: My only fear is they'll try many things which are not available in many MMOs. So I believe they'll ride a good beta test stage and PR campaign to check if they'll work or not.
Q19: When SW:TOR is released, how do you plan on balancing your playtime and your community/content management time? Should people expect less content updates or will you sacrifice game playing time?
C: We'll surely sacrifice some game playing. Possibly I'd be still working during morning time and Guru will be playing games 16 hours a day *pokes Guru*. Anyways we'll also have lots of friends to help us on the content side. So I believe we'll keep updates going up...
Q20: Thank you very much for your time. Legion of Myth really appreciates it. Do you have any last comments you want to express to those who will read this interview?
C: You guys are really doing well. Well, I know that because most of you were purified in the flames of Shadowbane. :) So, that's a good sign of courage and willingness. :) We thank you also for giving us the chance to share what we think and what we foresee... Hope to be in close contact with you guys and see you around my saber when this game is up. :)
[Editor's Note: I mentioned to Caine that Legion of Myth was founded from Order of the Blade (Blade Empire), on the Chaos server in Shadowbane. I'm sure most of us remember Ebonlore, right? If you played Shadowbane, you couldn't miss them. Ebonlore was one of the most powerful guilds in Shadowbane. :) That's where Caine and Guru come from.]
Final comments from your interviewer, MaxLiao:
Of course, I want to thank Caine and Guru again for their time! Considering there was a lot of the last minute work put into this, I think this interview came out pretty okay. :) Please, everyone, when you have the time, check out SWTOR Temple at http://www.swtortemple.com. If you're a Legion of Myth member, represent us well and get involved as time permits. If you're not an LoM member, I hope to see you on SWTOR temple and in SW:TOR the game.
